This week, I had my first face to face with a bamma ass supervisor. It was an instance where I can't help but wonder if my race and gender had something to do with it. Dude is a total punk, and has talked down to his Delegates like they are nothing. The two Delegates in question are African-American (male) and a white woman. I have heard stories about this dude, so during the meeting, I made sure to stand over him after forcefully suggesting that he sit down and listen. He spoke to me the way white men speak to each other when they're in a back room, and are trying to be all Good Ole Boy about shit. It was the attitude of "O, you're not a worker, because you obviously know what's going on." This is in spite of the fact that the worker I was speaking to him about was present (but ignored of course) and frankly knew more about his contract than I did. There was essentially no reason for me to be there, as the worker outlined the case FOR ME and told ME how to best handle the dude. The worker did everything but move my tounge and lips to articulate the sentences. But of course, I have to show face from the Union, and of course the workers couldn't possibly be educated about their own work place. ::eyeroll:: It was evident that he listened to me for other reasons, even though all I did was repeat what was said by his employee the last time that they met about the issue. Often, the Union will have to just show up to prove that they are serious, but it is this other attitude that really pisses me off. After seeing that his tactics aren't going to work, he acted like a dude in a principal's office - until the end when he tried to belittle his workers again.
I really can't articulate how this makes me feel, except to say that I am beginning to understand why Union organizers never talk about their work that much, even to other organizers. After watching shit like this every day, I am not much in the mood to talk about it either.
Back to it, yall! |

On the up side, as much as you hate the situation (as much as any sane person should), you are most likely the person the guy is going to take seriously. It doesn't make the situation any less fucked up, and there's no excuse for it in the first place, but if this guy and people like him get a taste of Jack Salt, it will hopefully break the shell of utter bullshit.
You're doing a damn tough job, but when you recognize this sort of thing for what it is, it will make you more effective. Hopefully you can also help increase solidarity among the workers, when they see someone they don't suspect to be on their side take up the cause.
